President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says members of the Parliament did not have any discussion with his government before the Parliament's Public Accounts decided to hike the salaries of the President, Vice President, and cabinet Ministers.
In a post on X, President Muizzu said his government had not requested for a salary hike and that the government does not even want to increase the salaries of the top officials.
He went on to say that he and his cabinet would donate the amount added to their salaries to a social fund.
The President's words were echoed by his Chief Spokesperson Mohamed Shaheeb, who said that the Public Account Committee of the Parliament decided to increase the salaries of the top officials at the request of President Muizzu and that he does not want such an increase.
Shaheeb added that the Committee at which the opposition MDP holds majority seats decided without consulting the government can be seen as an attempt to create distrust among the public towards the government.
