President Dr Mohamed Muizzu appointed Fathimath Inaya as the Foreign Secretary of Maldives on Tuesday morning.
The President's Office said that she was presented with her letter of appointment at a ceremony held at the President's Office.
It highlighted that for the first time in the country's history, a woman has been appointed as the Foreign Secretary.
Fathimath Inaya formerly worked as a deputy minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She was appointed foreign secretary at the position of Minister of State.
The President's Office also noted that this Administration is highly committed to women's empowerment and gender-equal opportunities as top priorities.
But contrary to this, most of the appointments made by this government have been men. The cabinet of President Muizzu also heavily favors men as only three out of the 22 Ministers are female.
The same goes for the Managing Directors of State Owned Companies.
