The government has announced that it would fund bone marrow transplant surgeries for five children with Thalassemia in one year as it looks to enhance healthcare services offered to those suffering from the hereditary condition.
Speaking at the Press Conference held at the President's Office after the Cabinet meeting today, Under Secretary for Public Policy Mohamed Firuzul said that while the government would bear the cost of five such procedures in one year, one of the patients would undergo the procedure in the coming weeks.
Firuzul said that there is a list of patients waiting for the procedure and that the list contains around 40 patients. He said that the cabinet today decided to fund the bone marrow transplant procedures for all those named in the list.
Firuzul further said the government is aiming to finish these procedures within its five-year term.
The Under Secretary for Public Policy also said that the government is working to create a system in which all Thalassemia patients who are medically qualified for a bone marrow transplant can get the procedure within the government healthcare system.
