Police have arrested the alleged mother of a newborn baby who was found in a bag thrown in the dump yard in Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah.
The woman was arrested at Velaana International Airport before she fled the country.
Police apprehended a 30-year-old Sri Lankan woman concerning the case. It has been also reported that the woman worked at one of the guest houses on the island.
The Police said the report of the incident came around 09:20 a.m. today and that the baby was found in a bag thrown at the dumping yard.
Police said that one of its team was now at the scene on the island and a doctor who checked the newborn confirmed that the baby was dead.
One of the sources from the island said that the baby had its umbilical cord attached to its body when it was found and from the look and color of the baby it looked like the baby was dumped sometime last night.
Newborn baby 'dumping' has grown uncommon in the Maldives in recent years but now and then a case surfaces in the country, mostly in the inner islands.
