Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed has for the first time revealed that he supported the opposition candidate and eventual winner Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the 2nd round of the Presidential Elections.
He revealed this while speaking at a ceremony in Sri Lanka while on an unofficial trip to the country.
Nasheed said that the Maldives recently had its Presidential election and that the international media reported that the pro-China candidate had won the election and that the pro-India candidate had been defeated.
Nasheed revealed that journalists kept ringing him and asking him about the election results and that he told them that he supported the winning candidate and that he did not support Incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih whom he labeled as his friend.
The former President said that it was difficult for him to characterize President-elect Muizzu as pro-anything, China or India, and that he thought the President-elect was very pro-Maldives.
Nasheed went on to say that the country's elections must focus on Maldivian candidates, Maldivian issues, and what should happen to the peace and prosperity of the Maldives.
He said that he was sure that whoever came into power would be just that.
The Speaker added that he hoped that in the next five years, the Maldives would pursue a foreign policy in line with Sri Lanka, India and other south Asian countries.
