Maldives Democratic Party MDP confirms that the Supreme Court has accepted its case requesting the top court's intervention after the Parliamentary session with a no-confidence vote against the Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on the agenda was canceled yesterday.
MDP's spokesperson Anas Abdul Sattar said that the Supreme Court has accepted MDP's case and has given the party permission to prepare for the case.
Yesterday, MDP clarified that it wants the Supreme to clear up two points on the matter and that this includes stating that no other legislative work can proceed before the resolution against the Speaker is resolved.
The other point MDP wants to clear from the Supreme Court is to have another MP chair the session which debates a no-confidence vote against the Speaker in a situation where the Deputy Speaker is unable to attend the session.
Yesterday's parliamentary session was canceled after the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament MP Eva Abdullah called in sick. While the session was postponed for today, today's session was also canceled as MP Eva remains on sick leave.
Parliament Standing Order dictates that only the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament can chair a parliamentary session that debates a no-confidence resolution against the Speaker of the Parliament.
