Police say scam messages are being circulated to mobile phone users under the name of the opposition party People's Progressive Party PPM.
They said that the message is asking users to pay the customs fee for a DHL package to get it delivered. The message also includes a link that Police say that the link takes the users to a payment portal which would allow the scammers to hack into their bank account details.
Police urged those who received the messages not to press the link.
Meanwhile, PPM said that the DHL package delivery messages being sent under its name are spam messages. The Party also asked any user who received the message not to press the link on the message.
Online targeted scamming has become common in the Maldives with scammers sending such text messages to users to siphon their bank account details and get illicit funds from the victims.
