Police say they have increased security measures in the capital Male' City amid a spike in group crime activities.
In a statement via 'X', Police said that they have noticed that group crimes have increased today as the country votes for its next President.
Police said that because of this spike, they have now heightened their security measures to ensure the safety of the public and to guarantee that voting proceeds smoothly.
They further said that reports of such criminal groups intimating and threatening individuals who are active in today's polling have been submitted to the police on several occasions.
Police added that they were investigating these incidents as serious cases.
This comes amid attacks against two MPs belonging to the ruling MDP today. MP for Feydhoo Constituency Mohamed Nihad was attacked by a group while he was performing electoral duties in Addu.
Also MP for Maradhoo Constituency Ibrahim Shareef was attacked inside the Manhattan Business hotel in Male'.
