Elections Commission has closed down voting queues across the country as voting for the country's next President comes to an end.

The Commission said that voting queues would be closed at 04:00 p.m. but that any voter who joined the queue before 04:00 p.m. would be given the chance to vote.

Electoral officials have now placed one official at the end of the queue with a board saying that the queues are now closed. The Commission also confirmed that the voting time would not be extended.

Reports from across the country say that some ballot boxes have now been closed and ballot counting times have also been given.

The latest update released from the Elections Commission shows that by 02:00 p.m. today, only 58.42 percent of the eligible voters turned out for the election.

This amounts to 164,981 voters which include 82,798 men and 82,183 women. The Commission said that a total of 117,414 were yet to cast their vote 2 hours before polling was closed.

But many in the voter stations in Male' joined the voting queues at the last minute.
