The Court has extended the remand custody of a suspect arrested for alleged sexual abuse of a minor in Hithaadhoo of Addu City.

Police said to the Press that they received the report of the alleged abuse on the 23 of this month which said that a 15-year-old girl had been sexually abused on an island under the jurisdiction of the South Police Division (Gdh, Addu city and Fuvamulah city).

A 59-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case and remanded in custody for four days.

His remand expired on the 29th of this month and the court extended his remand for another 20 days.

Addu city Police are further investigating the incident.

For the past few years, Police have been prioritizing the crimes committed against minors and children with sexual crimes given special importance.

Police have also been working to protect the identity of victims of such heinous crimes and have withheld information about the victim’s island or atoll or where the crimes happened in multiple cases.

Investigations and court proceedinggs against alleged child abusers have been fast-tracked on several occasions with police adamant on revealing the identities of the suspects.
