MDP Presidential Candidate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih the government would be able to propose a surplus budget in five years' time.

He made the comments while speaking at a campaign rally in Thaa Atoll Gaadhifushi.

President Solih said that while the government has promised to fulfill its pledges to the people, it is always seeking ways to increase government revenue.

He said that once the RTL ferry services are expanded to all the Atolls and the airports are developed in different regions, more jobs would be created and government income would increase.

President Solih predicted that by 2028 the country would be able to double its economy and take it up to MVR 170 billion. He further predicted that government revenue would cross MVR 45 billion and reach MVR 50 billion.

He added that by then the government would be able to propose a surplus budget.

The MDP Candidate said that more time was needed to finish up some projects as they were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He went on to highlight what his administration would do for Gaadhifushi if he were to be re-elected for a second term. This includes expanding the island's land and developing housing projects, developing the nearby Usfushi as a picnic island, building a swimming area for the island, developing an extension building for the island's health center, and building an outdoor gym and a volleyball court on the island.

The President added that these things can only be achieved if he is elected for a second term.
