PNC Presidential Candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu promises to bring changes to the law and make Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo a city.
Speaking at a campaign rally Muizzu, who is also the Mayor of Male' City, said that the law stipulates that an island must have a population of more than 10,000 for it to be given city status and that he did not believe this to be right.
Muizzu said that if the island has the infrastructure and services in place and if it has a population of more than 8,000, then it should be given city status.
He noted that being a city meant that the island must have adequate ways to provide services, make progress, and have a plan to bring in more developmental changes.
Muizzu promised that he would bring the required changes to the law to make the Southern island a city. He added that if the island becomes a city it would open more doors for the island to further develop its fisheries and tourism industry as well as other sectors.
The PNC Candidate made other pledges to Thinadhoo including further developing its fisheries industry as well as further developing nearby Kaadehdhoo airport.
He also promised to build a tertiary hospital on the island, develop sporting resources, and upgrade the school worthy of a city.
