MDP Presidential Candidate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says no country in the world is questioning the jailing of former President Abdullah Yameen.
Solih's predecessor Yameen is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence after he was convicted of money laundering and accepting bribes in the lease of Vaavu Aarah case last year.
Speaking at Raa Atoll Inguraidhoo while on a campaign trip to the island, President Solih said that a solid foreign policy plays a vital role in good governance and that no country in the world can achieve anything by isolating itself from other countries.
He said that each country must foster trustworthy relationships with other countries in order to maintain its freedom, and security and also to bring about progress.
President Solih said that the previous administration's policy was totally different and that they preached isolation in the name of nationalism to the citizens.
He said times have changed that countries cannot remain isolated and that countries must build lasting relationships with the International Community.
The MDP Candidate said that the Maldives has today established ties with 185 countries and that Maldivians can travel to 90 countries without applying for a visa prior to traveling.
He added that the Maldivian passport was the most powerful passport in the world.
President Solih highlighted that the fact that no country has questioned the jailing of former President Yameen shows that the Internation Community has accepted the Maldivian foreign Policy. He said that some are going to the islands making speeches insinuating that there are foreign troops on those islands but the country is yet to see these foreign troops.
As for Inguraidhoo it self, President Solih promised to build housing units on the island to address the housing constrictions on the island and build a new harbor for the island.
He also said that his administration would reclaim land from the east side of the island to build a boat yard for the community as well as develop a new building for the island council and set up a hand ball court on the island.
