Speaker of the Parliament and one of the leaders of the newly formed The Democrats Mohamed Nasheed implores the main opposition party PPM not to make his party vote for the ruling MDP in the second round of the Presidential Election.

He made the remarks at a campaign rally held in the Southern city of Fuvahmulah last night.

Addressing the members of PPM, Nasheed urged them not to make the Democrats vote for MDP in the 2nd round of the election and to carry out the matters of the vote in a clever manner.

With 8 candidates set to compete for the Presidency on the 9th of September, the election would go on for a run-off vote if any candidates fail to win an outright majority.

Nasheed implored PPM that the party can make sure that Democrats don't have to vote for MDP in the second round. He conceded that right now PPM had more support with more members and that the opposition party was more popular in the country.

The Speaker further said that he and his colleagues always structured their strategy based on the real political landscape of the country and work towards it.

Nasheed said that the best thing for the country today is for President Ibrahim Mohamed not to keep his post and that this was without any doubt.

In his speech last night, Nasheed also implied that he and the Democrats would work to free PPM's leader and jailed ex-President Abdullah Yameen.
