The legal team of former President Abdullah Yameen says the Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing of his candidacy case for 09:30 am this morning as the opposition looks to file his candidacy before tomorrow's deadline.

The proceedings would begin at 10:00 am and would be broadcasted live from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is expected to give its ruling today as it heard arguments from all sides involved in its preliminary hearing held on Friday which ran for hours with several breaks in between.

Arguments were heard from Yameen's legal team and the Elections Commission whose decision to reject Yameen's candidacy is being challenged at the country's top court.

Arguments were also heard from the Attorney General's Office and PPM as both parties have intervened in the case.

Most of the nation was glued to the proceedings which portrayed commendable legal arguments from all sides as well as the Supreme Court bench. Judges from the bench put forth pressing questions that drew further uncertainty over Yameen's attempt to file his candidacy while serving an 11-year jail sentence.

His legal team said that if Yameen wins his case at the Supreme Court and went on to win the Election, his Vice President would perform his duties until Yameen completes his jail sentence.

But the Supreme Court bench also expressed concern over setting a precedent of allowing an individual serving a jail sentence to compete in an election and what this would implicate.
