Mayor of Male City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu wins the Presidential Candidacy for People's National Congress PNC after a narrow win over MP for Maduvari Constituency Adam Shareef Umar.

PNC, the sister party of the main opposition party PPM, decided to field a candidate of their own earlier today with PPM's candidate former President Abdullah Yameen's candidacy still under question.

The Party's senate decided to hold a hastily arranged vote to choose a candidate and invited members to put their names forth. Only Mayor Muizzu and MP Shareef put forth their names for the candidacy.

PNC said today that 48 senators took part in the vote held today and that the Mayor secured the candidacy with 25 votes. MP Shareef narrowly missed out on the candidacy as he fell two votes short with 23 votes in total in his favor.

With this result, PNC declared Mayor Muizzu will represent the party in the September Presidential elections. Muizzu joined PNC today just to compete in the primary and he said in an interview that it was former President Abdullah Yameen's wish that he put forth his name for the candidacy.

Even though Muizzu was declared the PNC Presidential Candidate, the party will move forward to submit his candidacy form in the situation where PPM Leader Yameen is unable to compete in the elections.
