Police have arrested several high-ranking members of the Opposition Coalition who held a sit-down in Republic Square which is considered as a green zone by the armed forces.
Opposition members who gathered in the Square include MP for Naifaru Constituency Ahmed Shiyam, MP for Maduvaree Constituency Adam Shareef Umar, MP for Maavashu Constituency Mohamed Saeed, MP for Mahibadhoo Constituency Ahmed Thoriq, and Hulhumale Councillor Ibrahim Shujau.
The Opposition said that all four MPs along with Councillor Shujau and PPM Senator Ahmed Aifan have been arrested by the Police today. It added that others have also been arrested for gathering in the Republic Square.
Opposition leaders who gathered today called for the release of jailed ex-President and Opposition Presidential Candidate Abdullah Yameen who is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence.
While the deadline to submit the application form for Presidential Candidate would be open soon, time is running out for the former President to win his appeal at the High Court and get acquitted in time to make sure that his name would be on the ballot box come September.
