MP for Maduvaree Constituency Adam Shareef Umar challenges President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to release jailed ex-President Abdullah Yameen who is the opposition's candidate for the September Presidential elections.

The Opposition MP made this challenge after President made a challenge himself at his campaign rally where he called on the opposition to leave behind old tactics and take him on in a true competition.

The President went on to say that the MDP Coalition would put on a good fight and that they can now show results in the election.

In response, MP Shareef said via Twitter that President Solih is governing by employing his family and friends and that this administration is a democratic regime.

The MP said that President's administration has wrongfully jailed the opposition's candidate and is afraid that he might compete in the election.

Shareef stated that if President Solih had any courage in him, he would free Yameen and see how the campaign progresses. He added that he was sure that Yameen will take majority votes from all the islands.

Yameen is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence after he was found guilty of money laundering and accepting bribes in the leasing of Vaavu Aarah.

While he has appealed the case at the High Court, his trial remains stalled for now and his chances of competing in the September elections look bleak but opposition remains adamant that they won't field another candidate.
