President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih urges more writing in the Dhvehi language.
He made the request in a tweet on the occasion of Writers' Day being celebrated today.
The President said efforts should be made to preserve the literary heritage of the people and revive the language.
He added that more Dhivehi language literature must be produced in order to further preserve the Maldivian mother tongue and garner the interest of the younger generation.
Dhivehi Writers' Day is celebrated on July 8 every year. This was the date the first magazine was published in print.
The first issue of the magazine was written on July 8 by the name “Al Islah” on 8th July 1933. It was published on 22 December 1932 as part of Maldives’ first Constitution.
