The suspect arrested for hitting a pedestrian in a traffic accident that happened on the 28th of last month has tried to blame the victim for the collision.
Police arrested 22-year-old Shamman Abduh Shukoor on Monday under an arrest warrant and he spoke about the accident at his remand hearing at which the court ordered Police to keep him under custody for 15 more days.
It was reported that the accident happened because the motorcycle Shamman was driving hit a pedestrian trying to cross the streets and that the victim was on the crosswalk when he was hit. The victim of the accident was later identified as Ali Hafiz, a lecturer at Maldives National University MNU who sustained serious injuries and had now been sent abroad for more treatment.
Court documents stated that enough evidence has been presented against the suspect to prove the allegations against him and that he was remanded as he posed a threat to the community if he is released.
The court deemed the suspect's arrest as legally valid. Also, the defense lawyers conceded that their client knew that such an accident had happened and that a person has been injured.
But his defense argued that the collision occurred not when the victim was standing on the crosswalk, but when the victim ran towards their client as the victim was crossing the road and saw the vehicle suddenly. The defense said that the victim ran towards the motorcycle in panic.
They further said that the charges made does not reflect the nature of the incident and that the charges were not major criminal charges.
Meanwhile, the Investigation Officer noted that the suspect agreed that he did not possess a driver's license and that he had been speeding when the accident happened. The Officer said that although the suspect has asked to be released on bail, the Police requested that the suspect be kept under its custody.
