The Opposition Coalition says the government released the preliminary list of recipients of land plots in the 'Binveriya' housing scheme as a political stunt to influence the September elections.
The Opposition said that with around 75 days till the elections, it is highly concerned that the government decided to 'give away' land plots from the Male' area without thoroughly evaluating who deserves it the most.
It further accused President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of giving away the land plots reclaimed under the administration of former President Abdullah Yameen to those close to the President and top government officials.
It said that these include land plots from Hulhumale Phase I, Phase II, Gulheefalhu, and even from areas for which the government is yet to make Environment Impact Assessments.
The opposition said that the land plots were awarded unfairly and that the Administration has done nothing to fulfill its pledge of providing 20000 flats.
It called on independent institutions like the ACC to investigate how the land plots have been awarded.
Yesterday's list includes 10,314 recipients, including people who applied jointly and as separate individuals who would receive land plots under the scheme. The public can raise complaints or inquiries about the list from today until July 15, 2023, through the 'Gedhoruverin Portal.'
