Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed expresses frustration over how long the process of summoning cabinet Ministers and seeking answers to the questions requested by parliamentarians takes.

He made his views on the matter known after the Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali spoke at the parliament today in response to questions posed by the MP for Thimarafushi Constituency Abdullah Riyaz about the school building in Thaa Veymandoo.

MP Riyza said that under parliamentary regulations, Ministers must answer questions asked by MPs within 14 days but in most instances, it takes more than 14 days for Ministers to give clarifications.

He noted that if the Ministers are unable to offer their clarifications in a timely manner, it would difficult for the parliament to continue its own work.

After conferring with the Parliamentary secretariat, Speaker Nasheed said that these matters are not delayed only because of the Ministers.

He said even if the parliament summoned 10 ministers in one day, it won't be able to clear all the requests made by the MPs.

Nasheed then said that if the governance system remains the same, such hindrances should be expected. Nasheed has been an avid advocate of the parliamentary system of governance and has never let go of a chance to express his admiration of the system.
