The Elections Commission has removed MP for Medhu Henveiru Constituency Ali Azim from MDP's registry at the Commission after the party moved to ban him from the MDP for the next year.
An official from the Elections Commission confirmed to 'The Press that the Party had removed the MP's name from its registry and notified the Parliament yesterday.
This comes after MDP's disciplinary committee voted to expel the parliamentarian from MDP for his involvement in submitting the no-confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath in relation to the Chagos dispute.
The Committee set yesterday, to decide on the MP's future at the party and voted to ban MP Azim from the party for a duration of a year. All three members of the committee who took part in the meeting today voted against the MP while the Speaker of the Committee and the Vice President of MDP Mohamed Shifaz were not present at the meeting.
The Committee further said that Azim can only be readmitted into the party along with 100 forms from new members and that he cannot compete in internal elections within the party for the next five years.
Speaker of the Parliament and MDP President Mohamed Nasheed expressed his displeasure of the decision, insinuating that its President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih who should be expelled from the party instead of MP Ali Azim.
