Speaker of the Parliament and the President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been negligent over the Chagos dispute and that it should not be MP Ali Azim.

This comes after MDP's disciplinary committee voted to expel the parliamentarian from MDP for his involvement in submitting the no-confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath in relation to the Chagos dispute.

The committee sat today to decide on the MP's future at the party and voted to ban MP Azim from the party for a duration of a year. All three members of the committee who took part in the meeting today voted against the MP while the Speaker of the Committee and the Vice President of MDP Mohamed Shifaz was not present at the meeting.

MP Ali Azim proposed to slice lawmakers' salaries by 20%

In a tweet, Mohamed Nasheed voiced his frustration with the decision to expel one of the key members of his breakaway faction, 'fikurege Dhirun'.

Nasheed said that Mauritius asked for an ad-hoc arbitration proceeding to decide on the overlapping area between it and the Maldives back in 2019.

But since the issue was submitted to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea ITOLS upon the decision of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the Maldives ended up losing part of its EEZ.

Nasheed said that the government did not seek a recommendation from the parliament and that President Solih has been negligent in this matter.

He added that in this regard it should not have been MP Azim who is expelled from the party.
