Police have arrested in individual for allegedly vandalizing a mosque in Vaavu Keyodhoo and also tearing pages of the Holy Quran.

Speaking to 'The Press', Police said that they received a report last night that a suspect had broken the windows of the mosque and that they arrested a 27-year-old local man in relation to the vandalism.

Police added that they were further investigating the case.

The suspect in custody is also accused of tearing pages of the Holy Quran.

The Keyodhoo Council said that this was not the first time such a demeaning crime was committed and that last year also pages of the Holy Quran were torn apart but authorities were unable to catch the perpetrator.

Vice President of the Council Ahmed Sanee said that the offence was repeat again this year and while Police were investigating the matter, a youth living near the mosque heard a loud noise come from the mosque when he stepped out.

Sanee recounted that the youth had spotted a man coming out of the mosque and kept the suspect there until the Police came to the scene.

The Vice President of the Council said the suspect broke the window using a chair used for prayer and that the suspect was a pious man before but there has been a drastic change in his behavior recently.

Sanee said that the suspect in custody has spoken against the religion and that the people of the island had been in a state of distress because of such actions.
