Presidential hopeful Qasim Ibrahim says under his government he will enforce the foreign policies of two former Presidents.

The leader of the Jumhooree Party Qasim said via Twitter that under his rule the government adopt the foreign policies implemented by former President Ibrahim Nasir and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

The Maldives started forming diplomatic relations under late President Nasir's rule which also the Maldives receive its independence from the United Kingdom.

Under President Maumoon's 30-year rule, the Maldives adopted a non-aligned foreign policy in which the country remained neutral in most international matters.

But the administrations of former President Abdullah Yameen and his successor and current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's foreign policies are much inclined towards one or more nations.

Yameen's government leaned towards China and middle eastern countries and relationships with India and the West soured during his tenure.

Meanwhile, President Solih has re-established strong relations with India and India remains overly involved in the developmental projects being carried under this government.
