The Opposition PPM says police have been denying the legal rights of the individuals being arrested at the opposition's protests and have been denying them the right to seek counsel.
In a statement, the PPM said that the government has been obstructing these protests by using the Police as a tool and that the opposition is exercising its freedom of speech and peaceful assembly.
PPM said that Police have been using undue force when disbanding the protests and arresting protesters during peaceful gatherings as well as keeping the arrested individuals under custody for no reason. The opposition said that these go against the practices of democracy as well as the Constitution.
The Opposition also said that authorities were also denying the rights of the lawyers kept on the opposition's retainer to help in legal situations and that these actions are not acceptable.
It called on relevant agencies to investigate the use of undue force at protests and the government's attempt to stifle the opposition using illegal means.
The Opposition has been holding a series of protests after its leader and Presidential Candidate Abdullah Yameen was jailed late last year after he was convicted of several charges including money laundering and accepting bribes. He was given an 11-year jail sentence follwing his conviction.
