Authorities at Maafushi Jail have foiled an attempt by an inmate to smuggle narcotics into the prison by hiding it in the rectum.

The Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohmed said via Twitter that authorities received an intelligence tip that one of the newest inmates to the Maafushi jail was attempting to smuggle narcotics into the prison.

He said that the inmate was searched and that inmate's body was x-rayed which revealed that the individual had attempted to smuggle drugs into the jail by hiding them in the prisoner's rectum.

The Commissioner shared pictures of the x-ray as well as the bag of narcotics retrieved from the prisoner's body.

It is not clear the number of narcotics found in the search.

Smuggling contrabands in to Maafushi has become common in recent times and they include mobile phones, sim card as well as narcotics.

Authorities are taking extra measures to prevent such crimes in the prisons.
