The Parliament has thrown a motion by MP for Naifaru Constituency Ahmed Shiyam which called for the protection of locals who travel abroad.
The MP who represents the opposition coalition in parliament submitted the motion after the Indian Immigration authorities detained the head of the PPM's Hulhlhumale branch Abduh Samad while he was traveling with his family.
In the motion, MP Shiyam noted the consequences of ignoring the actions of certain countries that target individual Maldivians who voice dissent against these countries and that measures must be taken against such countries.
When the chamber was asked whether a debate should be conducted on the motion, only 6 MPs out of the 45 present voted for the debate while the rest voted to throw out the motion.
Meanwhile, Samad who was detained in India while traveling for medicine was deported yesterday and said in an interview with Channel 13 upon his return to the Maldives that he is looking to seek compensation from the Indian government for losses incurred.
He said that he was kept under detention for 18 hours without any questioning and that Indian authorities informed him that it was prohibited for him to travel to and from India. He further said that the Indians threatened him and took away his phone.
He accused the Indian authorities did not inform him of what he had done wrong and only that his crime was supporting former President Abdullah Yameen.
Abduh Samad is actively involved in the opposition's IndiaOut campaign and he has been seen at the protests and has been arrested on several occassions.
