President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed have sent best wishes to neighboring Sri Lanka on its 75th Independence day.

President Solih said via Twitter that he was sending greetings and best wishes to our cousins, the Sri Lankan people and President Ranil Wickremesinghe, and the government of Sri Lanka on the occasion of its 75th Independence Day.

President Solih further said that the Maldives will long continue to cherish the fraternal ties of friendship we enjoy with Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed pointed out the economical upheaval the country is currently facing by saying that before the crash it was a thriving and prosperous country.

Nasheed said that Sri Lanka is currently going through a bitter time but noted that he was confident that it will bounce back and regain its strength. He then went on to wish the Sri Lankan people the very best.

Sri Lanka defaulted on its sovereign debt in May 2022 which plunged the country into economic and political chaos.

The government then secured a USD 2.9 billion International Monetary Fund bailout in principle the following September.

But the cash will not be released to Sri Lanka until its sovereign creditors in China and India first agree to a restructuring of the billions of dollars of bilateral debt they are owed.
