Maldives Airports Company Ltd MACL says Velaana International Airport VIA set a new record of air traffic movement on the 7th of January 2023.
MACL said that on that day, 856 air traffic movements were completed. The Company said that this includes 605 seaplanes and 251 wheelbase movements.
MACL further said that there were 102 international air traffic movements as well as 114 domestic air traffic movements. It added that there was also 35 general aviation on that day.
Last month, VIA set a new record for its newly opened runway.
MACL said on 22nd December 2022 there were 228 runway movements and that this includes 104 international flights.
MACL further said that there were 104 domestic flights on that day along with 20 general aviation activities at the airport.
The new runway was opened last October and it is 3,400 meters long and 65 meters wide.
MAC had said then that with the opening of this runway, the number of planes landing and departing the main international airport will increase from eight to 20 per hour, which will resolve flight delays by reducing the time required to vacate the runway.
