Maldives Democratic Party MDP has announced that it would hold its primary at the end of next month.

MDP initially said that it would hold the primary before the end of this year and later said that it postponed the primary pending administrative arrangements.

In an announcement today, MDP said that it would hold its primary on the 28th of January 2023.

MDP invited interested members to submit their applications before 4:00 pm next Saturday and that the application must have the backing of 500 members.

The Party said that it would announce the final candidates on 26th December with the initial voters' list to be released between 28th and 31st December.

MDP further said that it would publish the final voters' list on 3rd January and that it would allow applications for candidates' representatives between the 10th and 15th of January.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed would compete in the Primary as both have expressed their interest in representing the party in the next election.

While MDP remains undecided on its Presidential Candidate, the opposition PPM/PNC Coalition had unanimously agreed to hand over its Presidential Candidacy to former President Abdullah Yameen.
