Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed says around 998 scam cases have been filed at the Police so far this year.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 'Multi-Agency Workshop on Combating Scam in the Maldives', the Commissioner said that more and more of the public have raised concerns about such cases.

Commissioner Hameed said that these cases are causing significant financial damage to the public. He noted that while the public has filed 998 scam cases so far this year with the police, the victims have lost around MVR 23 million to scams.

He further said that it was difficult to estimate the economic and individual impact of these scams and that the agencies are working to prevent such criminal activities.

But he said that the agencies have a lot to do to get to the root of the problem and that the Police were working to further enhance how they investigate such cases.

The Commissioner said that part of this includes compiling new investigational procedures for such cases and that Police were now being trained to execute the procedures.
