Maldives Democratic Party MDP has postponed its primary to elect a candidate for the 2023 Presidential elections indefinitely.
This was confirmed by the newly appointed Spokesperson of MDP Anas Abdul Sattar via Twitter.
He said that the Primary was delayed to complete some administrative details before the internal election. Anas added that the party would announce when the Primary would be held once all the details have been completed.
He did not offer any more details on the matter.
Some local media have reported that MDP delayed its Primary till next year.
MDP had said before that it would hold its Primary before the end of the year. But today's announcement now puts this in jeopardy with 1 month left before the end of this year.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed would compete in the Primary as both have expressed their interest in representing the party in the next election.
While MDP remains undecided on its Presidential Candidate, the opposition PPM/PNC Coalition had unanimously agreed to handover its Presidential Candidacy to former President Abdullah Yameen.
Yameen has since kicked off his campaign trips making stops in different islands and traveled to Addu City today where he was given a warm welcome.
