Maldives Food and Drug Authority says retailers are attempting to sell expired rice by changing the expiry date on the packets.

In a statement, the Authority said that it has come to its attention that retailers were selling packets of an expired product named 'Al Qamar Gold Premium Aromatic Basmati Rice' from Pakistan.

It said that retailers were selling 5kg packets of this Basmati rice brand and that they are selling them by changing the expiry dates printed on the packets.

The authority said that its investigation revealed that retailers were pasting a sticker on the printed expiry dates once the product expires and selling them off.

MFDA has warned against selling food products past their expiry dates as it increases the risk of causing harm to consumers and also decreases the nutritional value of the foods prepared.
