Police have confirmed that a platform erected to build the Thila Male bridge has run aground on the Villimale reef today and caused an accident.

They said that the Police in Villimale had noticed that one of the platforms had run aground on the reef and attended the scene around 2:45 pm this afternoon.

Police had further said that three people were injured when the platform had run aground and that they had been taken to the hospital in Villimale.

They added that none of the victims suffered any serious injuries. Although, a witness had said that one of the injured had suffered deep gashes on his face.

Police said that they were further investigating the incident.

Witness accounts said that the incident had occurred due to high tides in the area.

There have been concerns from environmental groups about the damage the bridge construction is having on the reef in Villimale with the majority of its reef now damaged.
