Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed says small political parties with no support from the public are tainting the system and creating rifts.
Speaking to reports at a news conference held earlier today, Nasheed said that all the Presidents who had come into power under the current constitution gained the Presidency by including small political parties in the governments.
Nasheed said that these small parties take up to 60 percent of the government posts.
He said that because of this reason the political and government system becomes tainted and rifts are created within the system.
The Speaker said that these issues must be resolved with whatever means necessary.
Nasheed had said today given a timeline on how to change the country's governance system to a parliamentary system.
He also revealed the amendments that should be brought to the constitution to pave way for a system change.
Nasheed had proposed that after the system change, the state would be headed by an elected President while the government would be headed by a prime Minister appointed from within elected parliamentarians.
