Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has submitted a resolution to MDP's Congress on changing the governance system to a parliamentary system.
Sharing his resolution on Twitter, Nasheed said that he was submitting the resolution with the support of MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaaz.
The resolution said as per the laws of governance and elections formed under the Constitution of the Maldives, it was difficult for one political party to fully govern the country with absolute power even if it wins the Presidential Election.
In the resolution, Nasheed proposed that the government would be headed by a Prime Minister who would also be a member of the Parliament from the party that holds the majority seats in the parliament and the state would be headed by a President.
He also proposed that the President would be elected through a public vote and powers vested to the President as well as the Prime Minister must be clearly stipulated in the Constitution.
The Speaker also proposed to compile a 'National List of MPs and proposed ways to make sure that the number of MPs does not exceed 87.
Nasheed has also included that key amendments must be brought to the Constitution that would state that the Cabinet would consist of MPs and to also reduce supreme court justices to five while also changing how the Judicial Service Commission is compiled.
MDP's Congress would kick off on the 19th of this month and MDP had said that around 1,440 members have now registered for the congress.
