Maldives Democratic Party MDP's Deputy Chairperson-elect Ibrahim Waheed says in the current political situation, it is not possible to give the party's presidential ticket for the 2023 election without holding a primary.
Ibrahim Waheed made the comments while speaking at a news conference held by MDP today.
Waheed said that the party's constitution states that the Presidential candidate from the party must be chosen after a primary taken among its members.
He further said that although some members have submitted amendments to the constitution to be discussed in the upcoming party congress, there are no plans to amend the clause regarding the presidential primary.
Waheed also said that though the party congress has the power to choose the presidential candidate without a primary, the national council does not and that the congress has no plans to hold discussions on the matter.
He noted that it is the National Council's responsibility to compile a 5-member committee to oversee the primary.
Party leaders President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed have both expressed interest in competing in the Presidential election next year.
