Health Protection Agency HPA has reported a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases reported nationwide last week.

In its weekly update, HPA said that a total of 1,202 new cases were reported in the country between 19th June and 25th June. HPA said that this includes 528 cases from the Greater Male' Area, 452 new cases from inhabited islands, and 222 new cases from others.

The new cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported since March 2020 to a staggering 181,586.

HPA also said that 51 people were admitted to hospitals in the period between 19th June to 25th with 5 COVID deaths confirmed in the week too. A total of 305 people have now succumbed to the pandemic in the Maldives since April 2020.

The Agency had said last week that a total of 405 cases were reported between 12th June to 18th June with 17 new hospital admissions in the period.

HPA had warned of the increasing number of COVID cases in the country and had urged all to take necessary precautions to avoid the further spread of the illness in the country.
