Health Protection Agency HPA has warned that the number of COVID-19 cases being reported in the Maldives has increased in the first week of this month.

In a statement, HPA confirmed that between 5tth June to 11th June it had recorded 142 COVID cases nationwide. In a further breakdown, HPA said that these cases include 50 from the Greater Male' area, 40 from inhabited islands, and 52 from other areas of the country.

The Agency highlighted the total cases reported in the last week surpassed the cases reported in the week before by 68 percent.

HPA also noted that the sample positivity rate, as well as the number of hospitalized COVID patients, increased in June.

It said that a total of 15 COVID patients were hospitalized in all of May but till the 12th of June, 11 people have been hospitalized for further treatment.

HPA urged the public to take all necessary measures to prevent the further spread of the illness in the country. HPA said that this includes isolating oneself if symptoms of the illness present and testing for COVID-19.

HPA also instructed those with symptoms, those who are near COVID-vulnerable individuals, and health staff to wear masks.

The Agency also urged all to complete their COVID-19 vaccinations and to ensure that they are up to date on their vaccines.

The COVID-19 pandemic has somewhat subsided in the Maldives since the turn of the year with authorities canceling the months-old State of Public Health Emergency in the country earlier this year.
