The legal team of the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has voiced concerns after a planned hearing of the suspects charged for the failed assassination attempt against him was canceled today.

While the Criminal Court had scheduled a hearing for 5 of the suspects today, it was later canceled after Maldives Corrections Services transfer the suspects to court because of bad weather in the Greater Male' Area.

This prompted criticism from Nasheed's legal team and in a statement signed by his brother and lawyer Nazim Sattar, the team condemned the decision to cancel the hearing.

The Statement said that this was not the first day that the weather had been bad in the Greater Male' Area and that authorities should have planned for such circumstances by transferring the suspects a day earlier.

It further read that authorities had been negligent in the case on previous occasions and that the legal team had made complaints before. It also said that Nasheed's legal team condemned the constant negligence of the Home Ministry and Corrections in relation to the case.

This comes after the Criminal Court had green-lighted Nazim's appeal to observe the hearings of the case yesterday.

Nasheed was targeted in May of 2021 when an IED strapped to a motorcycle was detonated outside his home.

More than 5 suspects have been apprehended and charged in relation to the case.
