A wild sea turtle has been sighted on a patch of sand in Male'.
The rare sight was witnessed at the southeast side of Male' at the Sinamale' bridge. The turtle from the green turtle species had landed on the patch of sand around midnight last night and had stayed on the patch at dawn too.
MP for Velidhoo Constituency Mohamed Abdullah Shafeeq had shared a video of the large turtle on Twitter earlier today.
In a reply to the Tweet, a local environmental group called Blue Peace MV commented that while it was quite a rare sight, female sea turtles come back to beaches they left to nest when they are mature (20-30 years).
The group also said that recently a similar event got highlighted when a female sea turtle landed on Maafaru Airport runway from the sea and was most probably returning to the beach it had left as a hatchling.
