Home Minister Imran Abdullah says while the decentralization system has now been adopted in the country11 years, it is now headed to the development of the atolls and islands.
He said this in the address he gave on the occasion of Decentralization Day.
Imran said that the decentralization system would only perfectly once the councils, the public, and government agencies work hand in hand. He said that all should contribute with ideas and ways in which the system can be implemented as per the law for the councils to fulfill their responsibilities.
The Ministry explained that it was the Local Government Authority LGA's responsibility to make sure that it conducts training to increase the technical and administrative capabilities needed to successfully implement the decentralization system.
He said that in this regard, the Ministry has now registered an institute called the 'Maldives Institute of Local Governance' and that the Ministry is seeking help from within the Maldives as well as abroad on how to structure the training and curriculums for the institute
In his address, Minister Imran noted that 43 islands have not compiled the mandated 'Land-Use Plans' and that the LGA was providing financial assistance to such islands to complete these plans.
He said that this would ensure that the islands zone off their lands and use them independently.
