Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has warned of a state failure if the MMPRC scandal is not fully investigated and those behind it persecuted properly.
The MMPRC scandal is one of the most elaborate and widespread scandals the country has seen and authorities investigating the scandal had said that it includes 218 individuals.
In a tweet today, Nasheed said that he had appealed to the government to acquire the services of a forensic auditor from abroad on a contract basis.
Nasheed went on to say that if the cases related to the scandal are not fully investigated or if those behind responsible are not persecuted then the State would have failed.
While the scandal is alleged to have involved several high-ranking officials from the previous administrations, authorities have said that several officials involved in the current administrations are also suspected of benefiting from the corruption.
As such, the State is pursuing MMPRC scandal-related charges against Current Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof who the state accuses received bribes to vote for a certain way while he was an MP back in 2014.
Former President Abdullah Yameen, one of the alleged masterminds behind the MMPRC scandal, was convicted of money laundering charges in 2019 but was acquitted last year after the Supreme Court overturned the conviction.
