Lhaviyani Naifaru island council says the 100 housing units built on the island would be leased after a 3-month rent cutoff.

This was announced by the council president Mohamed Rasheed at the ceremony held to launch the council's new logo and website.

Rasheed said that the government had informed the council that rent for the housing units had been forgiven for three months.

He added that the council is partaking in discussions with the government to further lower the rent for the housing units.

The government had yesterday handed over the finished housing units to the island council at a ceremony officiated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during his tour of the Lhaviyani Atoll.

Speaking about the 100 units built on Naifaru Island, the President acknowledged that the longstanding demand for housing on the island has yet to be met.

The 100 new housing units in Naifaru Island were built under a design-and-build policy by Rasheed Carpentry and Construction Pvt. Ltd. Each 1,000 square-foot unit has three bedrooms.
