MP for Naifaru Constituency Ahmed Shiyam says although the trials at courts should be conducted fairly and objectively, the reality is that the Government is seen trying to influence court proceedings.
The MP said this in reference to the MMPRC scandal-related cases filed against former President Abdullah Yameen and current youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof.
Highlighting that there is a difference in the handling of the two cases MP Shiyam filed a case at the Judiciary Committee of the parliament and said that the government had influenced the court to restructure the trial schedule and table the sentencing for June in the Aarah case against Yameen.
In a letter to the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, Shiyam said although the court has fast-tracked Yameen's sentencing hearing, the Criminal Court has been delaying Mahloof's court proceedings on the account of the pandemic.
Shiyam requested the judiciary committee to further investigate the discrepancies in handling both cases.
Yameen faces four charges including accepting bribes as well as money laundering.
Mahloof has been accused of accepting bribes while he was the MP for Galolhu Dhekunu Constituency.
