Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed 2,510 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives as the Omicron-fuelled wave continues to spread across the country.

HPA said that out of the new cases, 1,203 came from the Greater Male' Area which means the positivity rate in the capital is now at 36 percent.

The Agency also confirmed 788 new cases from the inhabited islands and said that 41 cases were reported from operational resorts.

It said that it is working to determine the location of 478 other cases confirmed yesterday.

The new cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported since March 2020 to 130,599.

Out of these, 34,768 cases were reported since the turn of the new year with the country now fighting another wave of the pandemic.

With the spike in daily cases, the number of active cases has also skyrocketed and HPA confirmed last night that currently there are a total of 17,777 active cases in the country.

HPA reported that 49 COVID patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.

A total of 112,535 people have recovered from the illness in the country since March 2020.

But the COVID-19 global pandemic has killed 274 people in the Maldives with 12 COVID deaths coming this month alone.
