Environmental Protection Agency EPA has fined Vashugiri Company for an illegal Environmental Impact Assessment EIA on Vaavu Vashugiri island.
In a statement today, EPA said that the company was fined for an illegal EIA done for the resort development project on the island and that they were given a fine under the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act.
The Agency said that the company has been given a fine of MVR 593,750.
The Agency also said that it had informed the company that it must pay the fine within one month.
An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process of evaluating the likely environmental impacts of a proposed project or development, taking into account inter-related socio-economic, cultural, and human-health impacts, both beneficial and adverse.
As per section 5 (a) of the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act, An impact assessment study shall be submitted to the government before implementing any developing project that may have a potential impact on the environment.
