Pediatrician at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital Dr. Ahmed Faisal says the hospital's children's ward is now full as the number of sick kids increases.
In a Tweet, Dr. Faisal said that all 32 beds in the Children's Ward are now full with patients and that the hospital has now moved some of the patients to the ER due to lack of space.
He said the issue of IGMH overflowing can only be solved once illnesses are treated at government hospitals and facilities in the Greater Male' Area and other islands.
The other state-run hospital in the Greater Male' Area is in Hulhumale' and although the Hulhumale' hospital has pediatricians, there are no super specialists in the field at the hospital.
In cases where a patient's health deteriorates, the patient is moved to IGMH which in turn makes the hospital busy.
Earlier, the doctor had warned of scrub typhus during the school holidays while many visited islands. Scrub typhus, also known as bush typhus, is a disease caused by a bacteria called Orientia tsutsugamushi. Scrub typhus is spread to people through bites of infected chiggers (larval mites). The most common symptoms of scrub typhus include fever, headache, body aches, and sometimes rash.
